[African Wikimedians] Wiki 20 regional livestream panels

Hi African Wikimedians,

We’re hoping to do a series of Wikipedia Weekly livestream in shows in the week or so after Wikipedia’s 20th anniversary in January, calling it “Wiki Week”.

Are some African affiliates interested in participating in something similar? What dates in this timeframe might work for you?

We could potentially share this with a wide global audience across the continent via a CentralNotice banner for African countries, which could get a lot of viewers to introduce the affiliates to many new people…

The main thing involved in getting it done would be if a critical mass of Wikimedia affiliates in Africa are interested (such as Ghana and others), and if there is a date and time that works for most people.

The format would be a panel discussion of representatives from affiliates across Africa, and possibly also pre-recorded short video segments, or whatever is suitable. There will be some music at the Asia-Pacific one as well.

As to dates, I would suggest possibly Saturday Jan 16 (which is when the Asia-Pacific event is) or Sunday January 17.

The date has not been confirmed, and we cannot confirm that we will do an event of this kind, because there has not been sufficient interest yet.

If 3 or 4 African affiliates would be interested, then I think it might be very possible to figure something out, and use the same model as the Asia-Pacific regional livestream.

Hi Richard,

So we have had a few Affiliates from Africa shown interest in this session and so we are proceeding to create a meta page for our event.

I wanted to know if the resources available to the Asia-Pacific event would also be available for our use.

Yes, fantastic. would be glad to have all of the same resources for the Asia-Pacific event go to the Africa event as well.

Do you have a date? I was thinking next weekend rather than this weekend if we want to have some time for planning beforehand.

We are looking at January 23 or 24 but there is enough consensus around both dates so getting one shouldn’t be a problem for us.

Great! Should you be the primary contact person(s), is there anyone else?

For the Asia-Pacific, we are having a number of affiliates submitting short pre-recorded videos of 2 minutes or so, you might want to do the same from African affiliates. They can also be in different languages of course, maybe with captions in English or other languages. It would be best to upload these to Youtube before the broadcast.

I have cc’ed Andrew Lih as well, who is helping with the Asia-Pacific broadcast.
